Best photos in 2011, from field to the studio

Thanks for visiting my blog. This is the collection of the best photos taken in 2011.

Let’s start with a little about myself. My name is Anton and I am a photographer from San Jose, California. Shot my first digital photo in 2001 and since then I have fallen in love with photography. As for my work, I like to try a little of everything, from landscape, commercial, wedding to studio. The goal is to have a good amount of exposure of different categories of photography. This is my second year doing the best of the year photos. For my best photos from 2010, click here

The best photos from 2011 start with a lucky shot. I captured a red-tailed hawk during a regular hiking trip with my family to a crowded local county park. While eating lunch in the car and waiting for the parking spot, I noticed that the hawk is just right above the tree next to us. With a mouth full of french fries, I quickly set up my gear and luckily enough, the bird was still there and it posed for me.

In February, we brought Giselle back to the studio again for her 4 months shoot. This time, she showed us not only her smile, but her personality.

……and a moment of us was captured by my wife, Cora. Her facial expression is just priceless. This is a great shot to share on her wedding day.

Get off me!

She has no problem with Cora. I am jealous!

A Moment of Bonding

In March, 2 year old Tessa returned to my studio again! She was a infant when I took her photo. She is so beautiful! Her doll-like face is one of the reasons that I added the photos to my portfolio. The other reason is the connection she shared with her dad. I loved how it was captured.

HDR shot with iPhone 3GS

I took this photo at work and I just can’t help noticing how dramatic this view could be if taken with HDR. I didn’t have my gear but my iphone. I didn’t even have any HDR app on my phone. So I decided to go download one instantly and hope that the moment wouldn’t slip away.

-Open App Store
-Search for free HDR app and found one
-install free HDR app

“you are running out of space, please remove some videos and photos”

Oh, Hell No!

-removed photos and videos, return to App store

“you are running out of space, please remove some videos and photos”

-removed more videos and finally the app started downloading

-watching the status bar slowly transforming from white to blue…..and waiting…..and waiting

For a minute, the cloud started to clear and I thought I lost the chance. But more cloud moved over to cover the sun and by the time, I have my app installed and ready to rock. SWEET! Thanks to the app creator and it was very easy to use. All it took just two taps on the phone followed by a few adjustments.

voila!

This is one of the 4 HDR that I created. The sun and the cloud worked in a perfect position to light up the flag.

The name of the app - HDR-foto. Totally free!

POTW #3 – Nature in Sin City, Part 1 of 2

The Nature that surrounds Sin City (Las Vegas)

What comes to everyone’s mind when it comes to Vegas? Glasses of Margarita? The sound of coins dropping from a slot machine followed by cheering from a lucky gambler? The murmur from hungry patrons who are waiting in buffet line for almost an hour? Or the Elvis impersonator that appears under the Welcome to Vegas sign?

The attention of Vegas is concentrated on the Strip. Little known to the visitors, the outdoor activities near Vegas are equally fun as the indoor activities but in a much healthier way. In this episode of POTW, we will cover three parks that offer fun activities and striking desert scenery.

Cora and I have been to many places but we have never been to Vegas as a couple. In March 2011, we decided to spend a few days there for a break from baby Giselle (we needed one badly!). We had a great time from the fine food and entertainment. We then started to dig deeper into the internet for more activities off the strip. To my surprise, there are a lot! In fact, it was overwhelming enough that we decided to book another trip to visit there just for the outdoor. The second time, we decided to drive and we had our dust-collecting-kayak with us. I know I promised a POTW article for kayaking in the high country in Yosemite. But I feel like this one will be more interesting so I will leave the Yosemite for the next time. This will be a 2-part POTW that covers 3 places just outside of Vegas. The first part is the kayaking in the Colorado River, this place is also known as Black Canyon.
